Taiwan uses AR/VR to create an unlimited foreign language learning environment

Elementary school children experience learning through VR device

Under the wave of globalization, the construction of English learning environment has become the most important issue in the world, even Taiwan has no exception. However, due to the disparity between urban and rural areas, the uneven distribution of educational resources and teachers, children in remote areas often face the problem of lacking application environment in the process of learning English, which makes it difficult to apply the contents learned in class to daily life, resulting in limited practical experience. If the corresponding learning situation is needed for this purpose, a considerable one-time hardware cost must be borne. Therefore, most of the teaching methods still rely on traditional textbooks and other teaching materials.

In order to make the domestic English teaching results more integrated into children’s life and extend the English learning environment from the classroom to the campus, even the whole city, the Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs has assisted LiveABC through VR, AR and other technologies to make teaching free from hardware restrictions, and students can experience different AR learning situations in the same classroom. The VR wearable device can also be used to practice speaking English in the virtual scene to achieve immersive learning effect. Combined with LBS technology, the learning field is extended to the campus and surrounding areas, so that students can learn English closely related to their life from the environment they are most familiar with. It not only improves the learning pleasure and willingness, but also enables the local culture and school curriculum to fully integrate learning withpractice

At present, LiveABC has completed the construction of English smart campus in 45 primary and secondary schools in 7 counties and cities of Taiwan, including Taipei, Nantou, Lienchiang, Hualien, Taitung, New Taipei City and Taichung. It has also set up a platform for sharing English teaching resources to teachers and students from different schools and cities. In addition, the “English smart city app” has been launched to connect 186 characteristic scenic spots in 7 counties and cities of Taiwan, so that ordinary people can create all English learning situations in their life, in order to make the whole Taiwan becoming an English learning classroom for everyone.
